Adults can be defined as animals or human beings which have attained their maximum growth and development. When used with humans, the term "adult" could mean anything that is related to legal or social concepts. An adult who is legally mature, in contrast to "minors" (also known as non-adults), is someone who is older than the average age and consequently considered responsible, independent, and autonomous. An adult who is legally mature can be described as a major. Age 18 is as the age of legal maturity, but this definition can differ according to the nation, lawful rights or the development of a person's psychological.

When it comes to the life span of human beings, adulthood refers to the age at which he or she has achieved full mental and physical maturity. Adulthood, as it is commonly understood, starts around the age of 20 or 21. Then, after middle age (starting about 40 years old) is the time to reach old age (around the age of 60). The three major stages of adulthood include early adulthood (from the mid 30s until late 60s), middle adulthood from mid-30s until late-60s and then later adulthood, (mid-60s up to end of life). Physical maturation has been completed at the point we are in our early adulthood (20-40s) but the weight and height may increase slightly. During young adulthood we reach the peak of our physical capabilities.
